Starcraft 2: Beautiful Spaceship, Beautiful Game

This morning I received an email from Blizzard stating that I was one of the lucky people accepted into their Beta Testing program.  Am I excited?  You bet!  Starcraft (original) was one of the older (oldest?) PC Real Time Strategy games, though I do have a confession to make here:  I’ve never played the first one.  I’ve seen it played, and I really wanted to, but somehow my copy disappeared before I had the chance.  Will be rectifying that sorry state of affairs as soon as humanly possible.

Anyway, with the chance to play the game in beta mode placed right in front of me, I thought it’d be a great opportunity to [slope off and play video games] tells you all in advance that the review would be due in the next couple of weeks!  I’m also going to fire off an email to Blizzard and see if I can create a video or two to show you (if not, you can always check Youtube – there’s hundreds of clips already up).   Some nice screenshots and I think we may be onto something special here.

Meanwhile, to tease you and provide a taster of things to come, here’s a few screenshots from the company site.  Let me know what you think!

    • But isn’t it shiny? Lol, you’ll get to see more of it later (at least, in proper review form; we’ll have to see what Blizzard says about the rest)at which point I’ll be very disappointed if you don’t go and try it out. ;)

You’re going to love and hate this.

If you are diligent enough to take an enormous amount of notes, you will build yourself a “best practices” file you can use the rest of your career, or for your own products.

    • I was planning on playing for the sake of playing once, then going back through and taking lots of notes anyway. Any advice on what I should be noting down?

There’s the obvious what works and what doesn’t work, and I’ll be on the lookout for really cool things anyway (review purposes), just wondering if there’s anything else I should add. :)

    • I’ll make sure to do an extra good job then Karen ;)

Emailed Blizzard earlier today, so hopefully they’ll let me make some in-game footage to share with everyone too.

    Hey…thats great. Congratulations!

I haven’t ever played Starcraft but some of my friends have and they told me its a great network based rts game. I’ve never been a huge fan of RTS games but I played Rise of Nations like 7 years ago, and it was really fun (a bit addictive though). Do you know whats the most addicitive RTS game?

Anyway I’m looking forward to your review of Starcraft 2.

    take care

    • Thanks Ismail, great to see you!

I’ve only played a few RTS games, though I would say that after having a few games of Starcraft 2 its shaping up to be pretty addictive (and its beautiful, really). Lord of the Rings is really good too though, might have to review that at some point.

Not played Rise of Nations; what’s it like?

Its like you have to build up nations and flourish them, make trade with other countries, make allies, make universities and progress. Also you can make armies and go to conquer other nations. Some famous nations are already there to kick start with like ‘Aztecs’, ‘British’, ‘Mongols’, ‘Indian Mughals’, and ‘Persians’, ‘Greeks’ etc. All of these nations have something unique in their capabilities and you also get to make wonders. All in all its graphics are pretty beautiful and its a solid game…and i would definitely recommend. Also while you progress, the whole world is automatically transported to a new era in future. The last era I got to play was that of WW2. :-)

        take care
