Influence of Games

Yesterday we had a visitor to our college course; someone working for Realtime Worlds (Gaming Company based in Dundee).  It’s not the first time I’ve met anyone from there, in general they’re a lovely bunch of people.  Anyway, we were talking about beta testing and becoming part of a Quality Assurance Team.  Playing and breaking games before the public gets their hands on them to find bugs and problems.

The benefits to becoming a QA include:

  • Gateway to other jobs within the company (even 3D)
  • Greater knowledge of what goes into making a game
  • Honing your attention to detail and learning to think even more outside the box
  • You get to play games (note: I’m not for a second saying this is easy)

At the moment I don’t play enough games to even have a hope of getting involved with this.  Also, since I’m meant to be relaxing more anyway, a chance to play more definitely wouldn’t go amiss.

The Problem with Friday

Up until now I’ve tried to keep Fridays for reviews of products and study aids for art and 3D.  Some days I’ve been more successful at that than others, though I’ve started to notice that when I just devolve into total randomness for the day I’m getting a much better response.  I like reviews – they let me share products with you that I think would be helpful, and there’s potential there for me to earn a buck or two from affiliate links.  Here’s the thing though, some days I find them deathly boring to write.

If I’m finding them deathly boring to write, how can I expect any of you to find them interesting?

The New Plan

Here’s what we’re going to do (unless anyone strongly objects and demands their old Fridays =P);

  • Every month I’ll review a single study aid/book/tutorial product.
  • A couple of times a month I’ll review games.
  • The last week of every month will be my day of sharing; I’ll set up some links, some random, some jokes too maybe, and we’ll all kick back and have a blast.

This will give me a chance to play more and relax, while still providing you with (hopefully) everything you could want or need from a review perspective.  Besides, fun is good for you.

So what do you say; ready to kick ass and play video games?

I’m not much of a gamer myself. I have not been interested in a game really since pacman came out yrs. ago.. I played it alot in the local game room, other than that I just don’t take the time to learn much about them. (part of my too serious side I know) However, that sounds like a really neat project for you guys and I think I’d be willing to at least try to learn or play I guess you might say. I could be the one who breaks them. :)

As for friday funny’s keep’em coming! As for reviews I say do them too. I don’t do as many sponsored post on lees shizzle as I use too. I do try to sneak one in every now and again. But your right it I don’t like the product, haven’t tried it, what’s the use. I’m not benefiting you, me or the advertiser with boring shizz. I do like to do them though and usually use my other sites for this if I can swing it.

Play more and relax, that’s what I say!

    • You don’t play games?! Lol, kidding, but lets see if we can’t fix that hm? Actually its been ages since I’ve sat and played anything properly; too much work, not enough pretty graphics and fighting.

Like you, I do like doing reviews, just not always hyped up enough to run them (and certainly not every week, living and learning I guess). Probably the funnies are my favourite posts but I’ll be good and ration them a little ;)

      Thanks for stopping by ^_^

    Hi Heather,

The new plan sounds great. You are very lucky to be in a position where interesting people come to you. The QA experience sounds awesome, if that’s what direction you want to go in. QA work is a great way to get your foot in the door. I know guys who would love to be in that spot right now :-) Plus, it can be very lucrative.

    Keep it interesting for yourself.

If it bores you, we don’t have a chance!

    Hello,

Nice post, and I definitely agree with Dave Doolin’s comment. If you need guest post about games’ reviews please let me know.

    take care,

    Ismail

    • Thanks Ismail – nice to see you!

A guest post would be great; is there anything in particular you had in mind?

Thanks. I recently read some nice reviews about ‘Bioshock 2′ and ‘Left for Dead 2′. Moreover there’s a new game from ID Software in production called ‘Rage’ which seems very promising and worth waiting for. Another good game which a lot of people are not aware of is ‘Deamon’s Souls’ which is on PS3.

        • At the moment I’m a little limited to PC or DS games (sadly) but I do know the PS3 has some good stuff coming out over the next while. Bioshock’s on my list of games to buy, and it seems like Left for Dead 2 should be as well! With what I’ve been hearing about it around the internet I mean.

Anyway, if you wanted to write a guest post then it’d be welcome at any time; just send me an email when you’re ready and we’ll take it from there. :)
