I've had this issue and a few months ago actually discovered my external hard drive is dead. All the data is gone. Now I always put my data on DVDs or CDs or online storage somewhere. You can never be too careful as you never know what's going to happen or when. This is something to always keep in mind over anything else in my opinion.
