Video Tutorial: Glow Maps
On this week’s second Wednesday we’re going to look at how to create glow maps. It’s a pretty simple technique using Mix Maps and a black and white image. I was also planning on writing a tutorial to go along with the video but I’m running a little late this week. Next week the normal format will resume. For now, here’s the video tutorial version – hope it’s useful!

Ha Ha.. you crack me up.. This weeks 2nd wednesday.. reminds me of wimpy from popeye I think it was.. “I’ll gladly pay you the 2nd tues. of next week for last weeks hamburger, for the hamburger you give me today.” Something like that.

Hehe, well… I refuse to acknowledge that it is, in fact, Thursday and I am, in fact, late again. =P
Glad someone noticed the humour though.
Are you scripting in advance, or winging it?
You have a good voice for this.
.-= Dave Doolin´s last blog ..No blog post today. Two releases this week. =-.
Thanks Dave
Completely winging it at the moment, though it does usually take a couple of attempts (this time it was because my hotkey for ‘render’ kept stopping the video, pretty annoying
). Basically I just explain how I do things and hope it turns out ok in the end; good to hear I’m not totally missing my mark!
I agree with Dave there, you do have a good voice for this.
It was interesting to see how the sphere glowed onto the bottom. That kind of stuff is cool.
Looking forward to more videos from you.
Take care!

Aww, thanks Eric – always great to see you on here.
There’s actually two ways of making an object glow, not sure if I mentioned it in my video (actually there are probably more than two, but there’s two main ones that I know of) – the other one just applies it after the image has rendered so you don’t get the cool bounce effect. Hence I prefer this one
Thanks for watching, and have a great day!
Heather, I know I already left a message but there was no way to reply to your message after mine so I decided to write another one.
I agree that I like the bouncing effect of the method you used here. It added a lot of style to it. Design was something I could never quite get myself into learning about but I am very fascinated by what you can do with it if you really dig in and just give it a go.

Really? That’s odd, was it just not showing up with the Reply button? (asking because if that’s the case it’s something I need to try and fix
)
Anyway… design is a lot of fun once you start getting into it; it can be pretty simple to get some nice effects on the go. It’s sort of the aim of these posts to let people see just how simple it is to improve things in small ways, and give things a little bit of a zip. Definitely don’t claim to know everything (or even close to)!
I can see the Reply button, Maybe WordPress messed up for Eric that one time… Dunno though lol… Pretty random
Good video tut again… Still a little quiet, but just have to put my speakers up a little more than normal.
That’s a relief… shame it messed up that time though.
Thanks Brian! Sorry about the volume, guessing it’s something to do with my mic though; will have to see about getting a new headset at some point.
Maybe it is just messed up on my end. I think my computer is being weird and I’m going to have to change a lot or just reinstall the os to get some things taken care of. Either way, I’m able to add comments like this so it’s not a huge problem.
And yeah, design is pretty awesome and if I were to really dig into it I’m sure I could come up with some killer stuff. A friend of mine from a few years ago now can do some amazing things that just make me look at how cool design is. That’s what I think of when I come to this site, how cool design is and what you have in store for us next.

Ah computers… can’t make them work and can’t live without them. Wonderful things really
Anyway thank you! I’m honoured that you’d think such a thing really. What sort of design does your friend do?
Hi Heather,
I don’t agree with the others – your voice volume seems fine on my system.
Another great tutorial from you. It’s very interesting to see the project from start to finish. These are great learning opportunities.

Hey Karen,
Ok, so it’s possibly just differences in speakers then, glad its working well enough for you! Think I might still need to look into it though because apparently its really quiet on Skype as well.
And thank you
Glad you found it interesting.
I haven’t seen any of his recent work but he’s good at drawing things (on the computer and off, I think) that are just killer. He can make pictures out of colors and such.
That’s just the tip of the ice berg I think.

Sounds awesome
Let me know if he has a website or whatever, could stop by and say hi!
I don’t hardly talk to him much these days but if I do see him any time soon I’ll ask if he has a site or something.

Thanks
Obviously don’t go out of your way to, just if you happen to see him and remember… curious only.
